About

On September 6, 1960, Miami Dade College opened its doors with a bold promise: to provide accessible, tuition-free education to every county resident. As the first integrated junior college in Florida, MDC began a legacy of opportunity that continues more than six decades later. Today, that same promise has grown into the nation’s largest and most diverse institution of higher education, serving more than 125,000 students and connecting more than 2.5 million alumni to the place where their stories began.

Each year on September 6, we celebrate that legacy on I AM MDC Day, a 24-hour celebration of giving bringing together alumni, students, faculty, staff, and friends across South Florida. Every gift helps provide the resources students need to persist and succeed, including scholarships, emergency assistance, tutoring, mentorship, internships and other life-changing opportunities.

I AM MDC Day is more than a day of giving, it's a celebration of the people who believe in the power of Miami Dade College to transform lives.

Your gift today becomes tomorrow's nurse, engineer, teacher, or entrepreneur. Join the movement. Wear blue. Share your story with #IAMMDC.

Across Eight Campuses and Beyond

From Homestead to Hialeah, Kendall to Doral, Little Havana to Downtown Miami, Live Arts Miami connects students with the arts across Miami-Dade County.

Our Arts Education Initiatives serve both K-12 students and Miami Dade College students across all eight MDC campuses. Sometimes students take a field trip to experience a live performance. Sometimes the performance comes directly to their campus or classroom. Other times, they find themselves writing a song, moving with a dancer, playing rhythms with a percussionist, talking with an artist, or making something of their own.

Your support helps us bring more of these experiences to students across Miami-Dade.

What changes when students get to meet the artists behind the work?

Live Arts Miami brings working artists into MDC classrooms, creating opportunities for students to hear about their creative practices, ask questions, exchange ideas, and encounter perspectives that extend beyond the classroom.

Pictured here with MDC students is Rosie Herrera, our 2025–26 Artist-in-Residence - a Miami-based Cuban-American choreographer, dancer, and artistic director of Rosie Herrera Dance Theatre, and a 2024 Guggenheim Fellow. Rosie is one of the many local and visiting artists we connect with students through workshops, conversations, and other classroom engagements.

Your support helps us create more opportunities for students to learn directly from the artists shaping the performing arts today.

A Little Circus Between Classes

This past April, Live Arts Miami brought Canadian circus troupe Cirque Kikasse to Miami Dade College, with performances at the HialeahKendall, and Wolfson campuses.

Students gathered outdoors for SANTÉ!, a playful mix of acrobatics, physical comedy, and high-energy circus - bringing live performance directly into the places where students spend their everyday lives. Experiences like these turn a walk across campus into an unexpected encounter with the arts. Your support helps us bring more artists and live performances directly to MDC students.

Students Become the Songwriters

What happens when students are invited to turn their ideas into a song? Through Live Arts Miami’s Arts for Change Songwriting Workshops, students work alongside professional songwriters to write collectively - sharing ideas, shaping lyrics, and building verses and a chorus together.

No musical experience required, just something to say.

Your support helps us bring more artist-led creative experiences like this to students across Miami-Dade.
