Shoulders Project

The Woodberry experience is built upon the strength of those who walked these bricks before us—the mentors, coaches, and older students who form the foundation of the Forest. The names and stories below have been traced through generations of alumni and shared by Tigers like you to honor those who helped them find their way. This section is a living tribute to the shoulders we stand on, mapping the links that form the bedrock of the Tiger Nation.

A Resounding Success: Thank You, Tiger Nation!

The clock has struck midnight, closing a day that will be remembered for years to come. What we witnessed over the last twenty-four hours was more than a fundraiser – it was a tribute to the mentors, teachers, and brothers whose Shoulders We Stand On.

Throughout the day, your stories flooded the "Shoulders Project". We saw names of students, faculty, and staff appear alongside messages of gratitude from across the generations. Altogether, we have over 350 unique names shared as those who have had an impact on us.

From 47 states and 20 countries, you proved that the Woodberry story is a global one, co-authored by every Tiger who stepped forward today. Once again, OneWoodberry's giving totals exceeded our goals in both total amount raised and number of donors. While the final tallies are being calculated, the immediate impact is clear: our boys will have the resources, the facilities, and the faculty support they need to reach for new horizons.

Students on campus have all checked in on dorm, the faculty members on duty are signing off for the night, and so are we. Thank you for standing on the shoulders of those who came before you to lift up the Woodberry boys of the future. Go Tigers!

Watch the Replays: If you missed any of the action the Woodberry LIVE tab will remain active for your viewing pleasure.

As the boys on campus gather for Seated Meal, we share a story from Morgan Jay ’25. Morgan reflects on his freshman year prefect, Charles Innes '22, who taught him the most important lesson at the Forest: "show up for the guys around you, no matter what."

HISTORY IN THE MAKING: 3,000 DONORS & $3.6 MILLION SURPASSED!

The power of this OneWoodberry is on full display. We have officially surpassed 3,000 donors and a record-breaking $3.6 million for OneWoodberry 2026! While the financial total provides the vital resources for the Forest, these 3,000+ individuals provide its heartbeat. This achievement is the ultimate testament to The Shoulders We Stand On — a collective, generational effort to ensure Woodberry remains a constant resource for our boys.

As our donor count grows, so does the list of names of the people whose Shoulders We Stand On. We invite you to explore the "Shoulders Project" tab above to see the names and stories of the mentors who shaped the Tiger Nation. Your participation today isn't just a gift; it's a tribute to the people who paved the way for your own journey.

This spirit of stewardship is modeled perfectly by alumni like Ansel Sanders ’00, who learned to take the work seriously — but not himself — by standing on the shoulders of Thomas Hall ’98. Ansel’s story reminds us that Woodberry’s excellence is fueled by your generosity.

The Final Push: How High Can We Go?

With several hours left and incredible momentum, we are officially in uncharted territory.

  • Add Your Name: If you haven’t joined the 3,000+ Tigers on the board, add your strength to the "Shoulders Project" tab now.
  • Fuel the Future: Every gift beyond this milestone enables Woodberry to continue supporting student innovation and faculty excellence.

We look forward to seeing many of you at our regional events tonight. Let’s see how much history we can make by midnight!

When Passion Becomes Tradition: Jason Hill ’12

As we celebrate The Shoulders We Stand On, we’re reflecting on how our alumni didn't just follow traditions – they built them. Today, we’re highlighting a story from Jason Hill ’12, who shares the impact that Christian Dolan ’11 had on him as a student.

Jason Hill '12

Programs like the rock climbing team and Music Theory class were made possible and remain part of the student experience thanks to the Amici Fund.

Amici is the lifeblood that provides the gear for the climbers, the instruments for the musicians, and the expert faculty who guide them both. It is a vital resource that allows Woodberry to pivot and support our boys' passions in real time.

Jason Hill and his classmates provided the shoulders. Today’s boys climb those same walls and master the same complexities of harmony and melody because of the foundation they built. By giving to OneWoodberry, you ensure that when a current Tiger reaches for something new, the support of the Tiger Nation is behind him.

HAPPENING NOW: The Forest Access Pass Step inside the Forest for a multi-dimensional look at Woodberry today with an exclusive walkthrough of our new health center with Dr. Christal Boesen and Kendra Crane, see firsthand how your gifts to Amici support world-class people, places, and programs where our boys can thrive.

A Message from Matt Hastings P’20 ’24

Today is OneWoodberry, the annual celebration of our global community and their love of Woodberry Forest.

Six years ago, I joined the Woodberry faculty to work with the boys in our care – to mentor, coach, and advise them on their individual journeys as they developed into young men rooted in character and service to one another. During that time, I have learned that it is our uniquely devoted community that truly sustains our mission, providing the foundation that shapes every boy’s experience while fortifying the school over generations. We are truly rooted in The Shoulders We Stand On and the decades of alumni, teachers, coaches, and mentors that have defined Woodberry Forest.

In April, alumni will return to campus for reunions of 50, 60, and even 70 years. There will also be boys from the Class of 2021 in attendance who will look at those older alumni with reverence and a new appreciation for the fact that being a Tiger is truly a meaningful and lifelong experience. One young alumnus from the Class of 2020 told me, after witnessing the depth of support and attendance at last year’s reunion, that he will “never miss the chance to come back here.” The willingness of Woodberry alumni to continually show up for the school, and for each other, has defined an enduring culture of community that remains as impactful today as it was a generation ago.

Your gift to the Amici Fund is more than just financial support for the boys in our care today; it is a reflection that Woodberry matters to you, and to the world around us. It provides the resources needed to attract the very best educators and maintain the level of comprehensive programming that serves today’s boys during the most formative years of their lives. Your support is vital, and we remain grateful for your continued commitment to Woodberry Forest.

Thank you, and Go Tigers!

Gift challenges are milestone-based (e.g., if 100 people make a donation, I will give $250). We recommend you keep your matches and challenges simple and attainable.

If you would like assistance setting up a match or challenge, please contact Bill Robertson, Director of the Amici Fund & Alumni Relations, at bill_robertson@woodberry.org.

About

As we celebrate the tenth anniversary of OneWoodberry – and over twenty years of Amici Fund events – we invite the global community to join us in a day of celebration for our school and the collective generosity that makes it so special. On Thursday, February 26, we unite as OneWoodberry to honor The Shoulders We Stand On - celebrating the classmates, teammates, prefects, mentors, traditions, and spirit that have created the foundation for the school we love. At the heart of our milestone event is the Amici Fund, the vital resource that fuels our effort to know, challenge, and love every boy in our care.

Your participation in OneWoodberry and The Amici Fund is the essential commitment to the brotherhood needed to carry this legacy forward. Please make your gift today (by clicking the “Make Your Gift Today” button above) to ensure that the Woodberry experience remains transformative for the nearly 400 boys currently finding their way at the Forest. Whether you follow the day’s impact through live WFSPN broadcasts or join a student-led classroom drop-in, you will see firsthand how your generosity fuels the daily life and growth of our boys.

Why Your Support Matters

We are often asked why Woodberry still needs the Amici Fund. The answer lies in our commitment to being good stewards of a mission that no one person can achieve alone. The Amici Fund allows us to:

  • Invest in the faculty who choose to teach, coach, live amongst, and serve as the mentors our boys rely on.
  • Create the extracurricular experiences that transform a good opportunity into a life-changing one.
  • Manage tuition increases to ensure Woodberry remains available to talented boys from all backgrounds.

Simply put, without Amici, we’re a lesser school. But with your support, we renew our commitment each year to the boys and the dedicated people who care for them. We remind ourselves that the essence of Woodberry remains the opportunity to stand alongside a band of brothers who are developing lifelong values and leadership skills to make the world a little better.
